"C'est curieux comme la musique n'élimine pas la ritournelle médiocre ou mauvaise, ou le mauvais usage de la ritournelle, mais l'entraîne au contraire, ou s'en sert comme d'un tremplin. "Ah vous dirai-je maman...", "Elle avait une jambe de bois...", "Frère Jacques...". Ritournelle d'enfance ou d'oiseau, chant folklorique, chanson à boire, valse de Vienne, clochettes à vache, la musique se sert de tout et emporte tout. Ce n'est pas qu'un air d'enfant, d'oiseau ou de folklore, se réduise à la formule associative et fermée dont nous parlions tout à l'heure. Il faudrait plutôt montrer comment un musicien a besoin d'un premier type de ritournelle, ritournelle territoriale ou d'agencement, pour la transformer du dedans, la déterritorialiser, et produire enfin une ritournelle du second type, comme but final de la musique, ritournelle cosmique d'une machine à sons. D'un type à l'autre, Gisèle Brelet a bien posé le problème à propos de Bartok: comment, à partir des mélodies territoriales et populaires, autonomes, suffisantes, fermées sur soi comme des modes, construire un nouveau chromatisme qui les fasse communiquer, et créer ainsi des "thèmes" qui assurent un développement de la Forme ou plutôt un devenir des Forces? [...]"

Kenji Siratori - Cyber Sphere


Poucos escritores “bizarro” – uma das veias literárias que mais sangue reconduziu ao coração da ficção científica – conseguiram a projecção das suas visões através de uma simbiose tão transparente entre forma e conteúdo. Em Kenji Siratori não parecem existir limites entre os espaços literário e musical, e as múltiplas formas de disseminação de que se apropriou, desde a tinta sobre papel até ao código digital do mp3, revelam uma Gestalt notável quando acopladas à mensagem futurista que lhes imprime. Todos os meios são válidos para o vírus Kenji Siratori que, nos últimos anos, contaminou o meio ambiente com um espólio de detritos electrónicos cujo rasto é facilmente identificável, se bem que dificilmente assimilável na sua totalidade.

Colocando um pouco de parte a componente literária da sua produção artística, no plano musical é inevitável a sua associação à falange de músicos que exploram as infinitas arestas do ruído. Masami Akita e Yamasaki Maso são nomes que surgem inequivocamente pela proximidade sonora que aparentam, mas os mecanismos conceptuais em funcionamento no subconsciente sonoro de cada um são bastante distintos. Se em Akita encontramos referências à ecologia radical e Maso nos atormenta com um psicadelismo ultraviolento, em “Cyber Sphere” podemos não só escutar, mas também compreender, um dos conceitos fundamentais da filosofia de Siratori: “o ruído da vida”.

No filme “Eli Eli Lema Sabachtani?” (título apropriado das últimas palavras de Cristo na cruz, “Deus meu, Deus meu, por que me desamparaste?”) do seu compatriota Shinji Aoyama, o espectador é catapultado para um Japão distópico, que em 2015 se encontrava a braços com a devastação absoluta e despovoação galopante provocadas pelo “lemming syndrome”. Esta doença viral que impulsionava os pobres infectados ao suicídio tinha apenas uma cura: a audição de ruído. Na improbabilidade de alguma vez sermos assolados por tamanha pestilência, “Cyber Sphere” afigura-se uma óptima panaceia.

This inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary
project aims to explore what it is to be human and
the nature of human community in cyberculture,
cyberspace and science fiction. In particular, the

Muleete é o famoso lugar onde habitava, em tempos, o Velho da Montanha. Agora vou falar-vos do assunto, segundo o que o senhor Marco ouviu de muitos homens.

O Velho é chamado, na sua língua, de Aladino. Fez construir, num vale, entre duas montanhas, o maior e o mais belo jardim do mundo. Aqui havia todos os frutos e os mais belos palácios do mundo, todos pintados a ouro, com animais e pássaros; existiam certos regos de água, de mel e de vinho; havia aí donzelas de extrema beleza, peritas a cantar, tocar e dançar. E o Velho dava a entender a todos que aquilo era o paraíso. E fê-lo assim, porque Maomé disse que quem fosse para o paraíso encontraria belas mulheres à vontade e rios de leite, de vinho e de mel. Foi por isso que o fez semelhante àquilo que Maomé tinha dito; os sarracenos daquela região acreditavam plenamente que fosse o paraíso.

Neste jardim, porém, só entravam aqueles que deviam tornar-se assassinos. À sua entrada, havia uma fortificação tão robusta que não era de temer surpresas de homens. O Velho tinha na sua corte todos os jovens da região, dos doze aos vinte anos, que lhe parecessem que se iam tornar homens fortes. Quando o Velho os fazia entrar no jardim, em grupos de quatro, de dez, ou de vinte, mandava-lhes dar a beber ópio, e eles dormiam uns bons três dias e, depois, fazia-os levar para o jardim onde os despertavam.

Quando os jovens despertavam e viam tudo o que vos disse, acreditavam verdadeiramente que estavam no paraíso. As donzelas faziam-lhes companhia, cantando e tocando muito alegremente,e com eles se deleitavam sempre que queriam; deste modo tinham tudo o que desejavam e por nada deste mundo deixariam aquele paraíso. O Velho tinha uma esplêndida e rica corte e fazia crer àquela gente simples da montanha que era um profeta.

Quando o Velho queria mandar matar alguém, ordenava que a um certo número de jovens no jardim fosse dado uma poção soporífica, e mal adormeciam fazia-os levar do seu palácio. Quando acordavam e se encontravam aí, ficavam muito admirados e muito tristes por se encontrarem fora do paraíso. Iam ter com o Velho e ajoelhavam-se aos seus pés, pois acreditavam que era um grande profeta; ele perguntava-lhes donde vinham. Respondiam: «Do paraíso»; e contavam-lhe tudo o que tinham visto lá dentro e o desejo de voltarem. Quando o Velho queria matar alguma pessoa, mandava apanhar o mais forte, e mandava-o matar quem ele queria.

E eles faziam-no de boa vontade para regressarem ao paraíso; se se salvavam, regressavam ao seu Senhor; se eram presos, queriam morrer, julgando que voltavam ao paraíso.

E quando o Velho queria mandar matar algum homem, apanhava-o e dizia-lhe: «Vá, faz-lhe tal coisa; mando-te fazer isto porque quero que regresses ao paraíso.» Os assassinos iam e faziam-no de muito boa vontade. Desta maneira, não escapava à morte nenhum homem perante o Velho da Montanha, desde que ele não o quisesse; e digo-vos que muitos reis prestavam-lhe um tributo com medo de serem mortos.

The club is a well of darkness, a claustrophobic space thick with anticipation. One spotlight falls on the center of the bare stage. Slowly, as a devotee to an altar of his own construction, a man approaches, steps into the white pool of light. He is small, of indeterminate age, but clearly nearing or just past fifty, almost painfully thin. He wears black. All black. A long-sleeved shirt, pants, shoes with long, pointed toes. A few bulky silver rings adorn his fingers; some sort of necklace hangs around his neck. His face is nearly invisible behind long, thick bangs, a curtain of hair which frames his face hanging past his shoulders nearly to his stomach, and huge, opaque wraparound sunglasses. He holds an all-black guitar, cradling it in both arms as though it is almost too much for him to carry.

D. Sebastião, um rei jovem e aventureiro, habituado a ouvir as façanhas das cruzadas e histórias de conquistas além mar, quis conquistar o Norte de África em sua luta contra os mouros. Na batalha de Alcácer Quibir no Norte de África, os portugueses foram derrotados e D. Sebastião desapareceu. E os guerreiros diziam cada um a sua historia. O desaparecimento de D. Sebastião (1557-1578) na batalha de Alcácer-Quibir, apesar da sucessão do Cardeal D. Henrique (1578-1580), deu origem a uma crise dinástica.

Nas Cortes de Tomar de 1581, Filipe II de Espanha é aclamado rei, jurando os foros, privilégios e mais franquias do Reino de Portugal. Durante seis décadas Portugal ficou privado de rei natural, sob o que se tem designado por "domínio filipino".

Em 7 de Junho de 1640 eclodia também a revolta na Catalunha contra o centralismo do Conde-Duque de Olivares. O próprio Filipe IV manda apresentar-se em Madrid o duque de Bragança, para o acompanhar à Catalunha e cooperar no movimento de repressão a que ia proceder. Muitos nobres portugueses receberam semelhante convocatória. À semelhança do duque de Bragança, muitos nobres não se dispuseram a obedecer a Madrid.

Em 12 de Outubro, em casa de D. Antão de Almada, reuniram-se D. Miguel de Almeida, Francisco de Melo e seu irmão Jorge de Melo, Pedro de Mendonça Furtado, António de Saldanha e João Pinto Ribeiro. Decidiu-se então ir chamar o Duque de Bragança a Vila Viçosa para que este assumisse o seu dever de defesa da autonomia portuguesa, assumindo o Ceptro e a Coroa de Portugal.

No dia 1 de Dezembro de 1640, eclodiu por fim em Lisboa a revolta, imediatamente apoiada por muitas comunidades urbanas e concelhos rurais de todo o país, levando à instauração da Casa de Bragança no trono de Portugal. (vide more at wiki...)

Lao Tzu (Tionghoa: 老子, pinyin: Lǎo Zǐ) merupakan ahli filsafat yang terpopuler dan juga merupakan pendiri Taoisme (Tionghua: 道教 atau 道家) kini. Riwayat hidupnya tidak banyak terdapat dalam catatan historis, tetapi kewujudannya terbukti dalam catatan historis Tiongkok, Shiji.

Menurut kitab Shiji[1], Lǎo Zǐ memiliki nama asli Lier (李耳; pinyin: LĭĚr), nama sopannya Boyang (伯阳) dan nama almarhum kehormatannya Dan (聃). Terdapat segolongan sarjana mengatakan Boyang dan Dan adalah nama sopannya[2]. Lǎo Zǐ (570-470 SM)[3], dilahirkan di Provinsi Ku(苦县), Chuguo (楚国), sekarang dikenali Provinsi Henan. Ia merupakan ketua pustakawan Chuguo pada zaman dinasti Zhou, di mana pada masa jabatannya, ia banyak mendapat manfaat dengan membaca kitab-kitab serta catatan-catatan historis, sehingga ia mencapai keluasan wawasan.

N'O meu Mercedes é maior que o teu mas que poderia ter sido numa carrinha Volkswagen estampada do mesmo tamanho que a tua

Nada melhor do que uma expectativa de incerteza para confirmar, depois, a magnitude da presença num evento que teima em não se afastar da consciência. A verdade é que, pensei eu, como vão acomodar-se cinco ou seis (eles parecem-me sempre muitos) psicadélicos e exuberantes indivíduos num tão exíguo espaço? Por outro lado, a possibilidade de estar literalmente embrenhado com eles afigurava-se óptima para absorver a excelência sonora que decerto emanaria, para além de, no fundo dos nossos espíritos, assentar a evidência de que tal cenário apenas encaixa como uma luva nas premissas fundadoras dos Acid Mothers Temple (AMT), que aludem à junção de espíritos livres que não cabem no mainstream. Com confirmações mais ou menos fiáveis da dúvida do local do concerto, foi pela Ribeira portuense que o prelúdio se desenrolou. Admirando a vista para a imediata e metálica ponte centenária D. Luís, e a atravessar um túnel de pedra granítica onde tresandava a urina e outros fluídos corporais sobre os quais não me atrevo a reflectir muito, chegámos ao nosso destino – o pequeno bar “O meu mercedes é maior que o teu”, onde estava agendado um de dois concertos dos AMT em Portugal (o outro concerto tinha tido lugar dois dias antes na Galeria ZDB). O senhor que estava à porta rapidamente confirmou o concerto, pois nas imediações nada o faria prever, acenando com o amigável preço do bilhete, uns míseros 7 euros para ver e ouvir um dos expoentes máximos do psicadelismo nipónico, o que se revela sempre um relaxante natural para a mente e, principalmente, para a bolsa.


Logo à entrada do bar, num pequeno recanto parcamente iluminado, os AMT tinham montado o seu bazar. O mercador de serviço era Atsushi Tsuyama que, apesar do sorriso permanentemente estampado na sua cara, não apregoava aos sete ventos os seus produtos com quaisquer chamarizes, técnica aprimorada ao longo de décadas pelas peixeiras do mercado do Bolhão não muito longe dali. Também não necessitava de o fazer. As relíquias que trazia eram suficientemente apetecíveis e apelavam por si próprias: inúmeros discos de AMT dos quais se destacava um “remake” do original minimalista de Terry Riley “In C”; o projecto “Acid Mothers Temple SWR” (Stones Women & Records) com Yoshida Tatsuya dos Ruins; “Andromelos” uma colaboração ainda desconhecida para os ouvidos ocidentais de Kawabata Makoto com Yamazaki Maso dos Masonna, Christine 23 Onna e Space Machine; o registo ao vivo “Acid Mothers Gong” em Nagoya com Daevid Allen dos Soft Machine e Gong; e outros álbuns a solo de Makoto como “Inui Vol.4” ou “Hot Rattlesnakes” atribuído a “Kawabata Makoto & The Mothers Of Invasion”. Nesta pequena amostra somos confrontados com a incrível proficuidade deste colectivo que torna difícil ou impossível, mesmo ao mais fanático melómano, de seguir com detalhe a vasta produção editorial.


Mas situemo-nos: desde 1995 que este grupo freak-out para o século XXI se associa a variadas editoras internacionais de modo a tornar acessíveis as suas edições, mas também como uma válvula de escape que permite suster o jorro das explorações sónicas que vai criando, quer enquanto soul-collective fundador (Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraíso U.F.O., sendo as últimas letras um acrónimo para Underground Freak-Out), quer dando corpo a demoníacas mutações (AMT & The Cosmic Inferno), ou ainda a um incontável cardápio de colaborações e a uma energia cósmica que catapulta o seu mentor, Kawabata Makoto, da produção a solo até ecléticas inclusões noutros grupos. Perante as múltiplas facetas dos AMT, ainda pensei em averiguar se teriam integrado na sua discografia um registo da suposta ligação ao culto Aum Shinrikyo (tido como o responsável pelos ataques com gás Saryn no metro de Tóquio em 1996) fruto de uma suspeita da população de que na comuna hippie dos AMT se esconderiam os elementos da dita organização.


Por entre as compras no bazar e os acordes do tímido Tenaz (que chamou a atenção pela baixa auto-estima revelada, por citar Derek Bailey e por não ter tornado penosa a espera até aos AMT), os olhares centram-se então numa pequena personagem de feições orientais, vestida de cabedal, sentada no chão a um canto, no vão da escada em espiral que conduzia ao segundo andar do bar. Um olhar mais atento e chegamos à conclusão que se trata, nada mais, nada menos, do que Kawabata Makoto. Dirijo-me para falar com ele, baixo-me um pouco e desejo-lhe um bom concerto. Este responde com dois ou três sons guturais e imperceptíveis. Enquanto aguardo pelo concerto vou olhando ocasionalmente para Makoto que, quando os cabelos negros cobriam por completo a face, desaparecia por completo nas sombras, como que num passe de mágica. Por mais atento que o meu olhar se tornasse, os esforços eram inglórios para conseguir decifrar o seu estado de espírito, pois a sua pose facilmente indiciaria um estado estuporizante induzido por substâncias (perspectiva coerente com o protótipo do grupo rock psicadélico ocidental), como também deixava perceber-se nalguma posição meditativa, ou simplesmente sentado a relaxar… Na verdade, nem parecia estar em condições para se levantar, quanto mais tocar um concerto! Pensei no slogan da família AMT (“Do whatever you want, don’t do whatever you don´t want!”) e adaptei-o fielmente ao Makoto que vislumbrava. Qualquer que fosse a resposta a estas questões que não interessam nem ao menino Jesus, a verdade é que ali estava o protótipo do guru, esperando pacientemente pelo momento certo para derramar os seus ensinamentos sobre os aprendizes. É nesta sugestiva ambiguidade que vou pensando na cosmologia dos AMT e na imprevisibilidade do seu significado: ora plácidos e cândidos, planantes; ora abruptos samurais avassaladores, abrasivos.
Quando os olhos voltaram ao recanto de Makoto, este já o havia abandonado. Como um oráculo que ainda agora fazia querer nas vastas faculdades da energia cósmica que com certeza ele estaria a invocar, algo que apenas pode ser imaginado, pois quando se olha para confirmar…ele já lá não está. Olho para o palco e lá estão eles finalmente: o “cosmic joker” Tsuyama Atsushi no baixo e vozes, o “dancin’ king” Higashi Hirosh nos sintetizadores, guitarra eléctrica e vozes, o “latino cool” Shimura Koji na bateria, e o “speed guru” Kawabata Makoto na guitarra eléctrica e vozes.


Metaforizando a sua posição central no alinhamento, os primeiros sons emanam do sintetizador cósmico de Higashi, preparando o ouvinte para algo que não tem preparação possível. A textura e envolvência destes pequenos interlúdios sintetizados electronicamente, que acabam por pontuar os vários momentos entre músicas do concerto, não são de todo estranhos a qualquer pessoa que tenha ouvido pelo menos um disco de Acid Mothers Temple. Estes são, aliás, uma das imagens de marca da sua música, que funciona como um elo de ligação entre o delírio terreno e a evocação à vastidão planetária na procura do nosso lugar. O aviso é dado quando o volume das ondas sonoras do sintetizador de Hiroshi gradualmente começa a decrescer dando por fim início ao assalto sonoro. O virtuosismo de Tusyama que, encostado a uma parede, debitava frequências subterrâneas de rebentar qualquer amplificador, associava-se aos ritmos motóricos da singela bateria de Koji, que pareciam estender-se num espaço sem fim, até uma simbiose quase perfeita. Do outro lado do pequeno palco estava o transfigurado Makoto que, desafiando a percepção, antropomorfizava a sua guitarra, punindo-a com iluminada mestria e velocidade estonteante. Afinal ele estava na posse de todas as suas faculdades, ou talvez estivesse ele próprio possuído. As suas palavras talvez ajudem a compreender o que se passava:


Music, for me, is neither something that I create, nor a form of self-expression. All kinds of sounds exist everywhere around us, and my performances solely consist of picking up these sounds, like a radio tuner, and playing them so that people can hear them. However, maybe because my reception is somewhat off, I am unable to perfectly reproduce these sounds. That is why I spend my days rehearsing.
Where do these sounds come from? Who is sending them out? That is not something for me to know, and neither is there any way that I could find out. I simply believe that they come from the 'cosmos'. (Maybe other people would call God the source). Since I was a small child I have been prone to hearing ringing sounds in my ears and other sound phantasms. At the time, I believed that these were messages aimed directly at me from a UFO, and so I would gaze up at the sky. But once I started playing music myself, I came to feel that these noises were a kind of pure sound. And I promised myself that one day I would be able to play those sounds myself

Um dos pontos altos – se é que estes podem ser discriminados – foi “Pink Lady Lemonade”, um dos temas mais conhecidas do obscuro e enciclopédico repertório dos AMT, pontuado por inúmeros crescendos e momentos de quase silêncio que se conjugavam numa espiral delirante da qual parecia ser impossível sair, ou melhor, impossível de querer sair. As parcas palavras eu próprio entretanto vociferava resumiam-se às requisições de cervejas, não fosse um contacto social mais elaborado concorrer com os devaneios imateriais em que flutuava. Nesta altura do concerto já toda a percepção de espaço, mas principalmente de tempo, se tinha perdido irremediavelmente. O concerto acabou subitamente, sem encore, por volta da uma e meia da manhã, mas tanto podia ser ainda onze e trinta e cinco e a noite estar a começar, como sete horas e o dia estar a nascer.No final, tempo ainda para nova incursão no bazar entretanto reaberto onde surgiu a oportunidade para falar com Atsushi Tsuyama. Disse-lhe que gostava muito do seu disco “Starring As Henry The Human Horse!” e ele agradeceu, sorriu e mostrou o seu novo disco a solo por entre os inúmeros títulos para venda. Já no exterior do bar, e enquanto procurava integrar uma experiência que sem dúvida irá ficar gravada na minha memória com caracteres doirados, eis que surge ao largo um realmente conectado Kawabata Makoto para se sentar num dos bancos com vista para o rio Douro. A sua companhia era um pequeno laptop com a marca da maçãzinha. Trocámos umas palavras com ele sobre o concerto e os próximos destinos da digressão. A sua simpatia, o seu discurso articulado, e o computador que tinha no seu colo, revelavam mais uma faceta do seu carácter, de homem ou músico contemporâneo, depois do buda sentado e da besta possuída em palco. Nós prosseguimos, a tentar colocar o que se passara num local apropriado.

Well, it all started with the organist losing his clothes as he sat down at the organ, and after this had happened and we had seen the titles of the show, we saw Biggles dictating a leter to his secretary who thought he was Spanish and who he referred to as a "harlot" and a "woman of the night" although she preferred to be called a "courtesan". Then we saw some people trying to climb a road in Uxbridge and then there were some cartoons and then some lifeboat men came into a woman's sitting room and after a bit the woman went out to buy some cakes on a lifeboat and then a naval officer jumped into the sea. Then we saw a man telling us about storage jars from Bolivia and then there were some more cartoons and then a man told us about what had happened on the show so far and a great hammer came and hit him on the head. (confused) I don't remember that! (a great hammer comes and hits him on the head). Doravante será feito um esforço acrescido para que tal não volte a repetir-se.

majdanek bakterium

Majdanek (originally Konzentrationslager Lublin) is the site of a German Nazi concentration and extermination camp, roughly 2.5 miles (four kilometers) away from the center of the Polish city Lublin. Unlike many other Nazi concentration and extermination camps, Majdanek is not hidden away in some remote forest or obscured from view by natural barriers, nor was it surrounded by a "security zone." It was established in October 1941, at Heinrich Himmler's orders, following his visit to Lublin in July 1941. Majdanek was an SS-run prisoner of war camp, under the command of Karl Otto Koch. In February 1943, it was turned into a concentration camp.

The camp's name derives from a Lublin district called Majdan Tatarski, and was given it in 1941 by the locals, who were certainly aware of its existence. The original German name of the camp was "Konzentrationslager Lublin" (Concentration Camp Lublin).

Silverio nacido en Chilpancingo Guerrero, tuvo una infancia de hamaca coco y cerveza. Emigra a la ciudad de México a los 16 en busca de fama, fortuna y para foguear su temperamento. Su primer aparición en el escenario fue tocando la batería en el grupo de vida efímera Alfombrator, que tuvo éxitos como "Cocowash", "Bahía de la muerte" y varios más, este proyecto musical en solitario comienza en el año de 1999 haciendo composiciones para la lucha libre: Los Infernales y Los Amorales, con quien trabajó varios temas.
Su música descrita en sus propias palabras, se denomina agogo electrónico cavernoso. Sus gustos: amante del box, las mujeres hermosas, el licor y los gatos de angora. Sus sueños: compartir el escenario con Bin Laden. Es un cliente asiduo de centros nocturnos como el Miller Mix y el Savoy, en donde se nutre de las últimas tendencias musicales y donde grabó su primer video con los bailarines originales.

Jerôme Savary

Né en Argentine en 1942, son père était écrivain et sa mère la fille de Frank Higgins, Gouverneur de l’Etat de New York. Sa mère revient en France en 1947 et sa famille s’installe en Haute-Loire où Jérôme Savary poursuit sa scolarité au Collège Cévenol.

Très jeune, il part pour Paris où il étudie la musique avec Les Martenots, avec l’ambition de devenir musicien de jazz. En 1958, il entre à l’Ecole des Arts Décoratifs. A 19 ans il part pour New York où il s’immerge dans le monde du jazz et rencontre Lenny Bruce, Count Basie et Thelonious Monk.

Quand il revient en France, il intègre le monde du théâtre et les « argentins de Paris » parmi lesquels : Jorge Lavelli, Copi et Fernando Arrabal. En 1965, il fonde sa première compagnie théâtrale : la Compagnie Jérôme Savary, qui sera ensuite appelée le Grand Magic Circus, avant de devenir en 1968 le Grand Magic Circus et ses animaux tristes.

De 1982 à 1985 il est directeur du Centre Dramatique National du Languedoc-Roussillon à Béziers et Montpellier. Il est nommé par le ministre de la Culture et par la ville de Lyon directeur du Carrefour Européen du Théâtre - Théâtre du 8e de 1986 à 1988.

En 1988 il est nommé Directeur du Théâtre National de Chaillot, poste qu’il occupera jusqu’à sa nomination à l’Opéra Comique le 1er octobre 2000. (in: ThêatreOnline)

INOUT was recorded on a Sanyo M7300L stereo radio cassette recorder with both an integrated and external microphone.

The recorder is in the recording standby position, both RECORD and PAUSE buttons are pushed. Then I sing or play a tone into the microphone. During this tone, I release the PAUSE button by pushing it. Subsequently, I press the PAUSE button again within a fraction of a second. Now the first short note is recorded. In InOut I added this way thousands of very short notes like
a patchwork, like an acoustic quilt with geometric irregularities and varied patterns.

The percussive effect was produced by the clicking noise of the PAUSE button. Recorded with the integrated microphone, those clickings appear with pretty high amplitude, depending on the vehemence by which I pushed the button. Recorded with the external microphone, the clicking will not be recorded and remain silent on tape. For InOut I alternated both possibilities; for a longer passage I recorded solely clicking noises to obtain a percussion solo. (in:

evp - electronic voice phenomenon


Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) é uma expressão cunhada pela editora Colin Smythe Ltd. para descrever sons de fala humana ou próximos da fala humana, supostamente de origem paranormal, que ocorrem em meios de gravação não usados préviamente.
Tais sons foram previamente denominados "Vozes de Raudive", pelo próprio
Konstantin Raudive, um estudante de Carl Jung, professor da Universidade de Upsalla, na Suécia, que estudou durante toda a sua vida sobretudo fenómenos de parapsicologia, nomeadamente os ligados à vida depois da morte. Foi pois um dos primeiros a estudar este tipo de fenómenos, ao lado do alemão Hans Bender. Raudive escreveu um livro famoso sobre este tema, chamado "Breakthrough: An amazing experiment in electronic communication with the dead" e editado em 1971. Esse disco era acompanhado por um flexi-disc, com alguns registos daquele fenómeno e com a respectiva descrição.

O programa de hoje baseou-se num projecto canadiano de acústica ambiental - The vancouver soundscape (1973) - que explora, desde os anos 70, o som dos espaços urbanos de Vancouver. No entanto, a inspiração levou-nos a misturar os sons desta viagem acústica urbana com o som de outros "arquitectos" sonoplastas, entre os quais Basil Kirchin, Conrad Schnitzler e os japoneses Tolerance.

"Acoustic design is described by the WSP [World Soundscape Project] as the practical, applied component of soundscape studies. It is considered as necessary in order to deal with the growing complexity and the unbalancing of the modern soundscape, which cannot be solved ‘naturally’. In t
he conclusion of the Five Village Soundscapes (1977), Schafer presents acoustic design as a discipline “which will concern itself with techniques for the analysis and improvement of existing soundscapes and the creation of new ones” " (Describing the contemporary sound environment+)

The World Soundscape Project (WSP) was established as an educational and research group by R. Murray Schafer at Simon Fraser University during the late 1960s and early 1970s. It grew out of Schafer's initial attempt to draw attention to the sonic environment through a course in noise pollution, as well as from his personal distaste for the more raucous aspects of Vancouver's rapidly changing soundscape. This work resulted in two small educational booklets, The New Soundscape and The Book of Noise, plus a compendium of Canadian noise bylaws. However, the negative approach that noise pollution inevitably fosters suggested that a more positive approach had to be found, the first attempt being an extended essay by Schafer (in 1973) called 'The Music of the Environment,' in which he describes examples of acoustic design, good and bad, drawing largely on examples from literature.

"Combining the gentlest of the urban projects, a 1973 survey of Vancouver's soundscape, with the most stylistically varied, a 1996 reprise of the project, this two disc set is a great place to begin tuning your ears toward human soundscapes. The first disc, recorded and released during acoustic ecology's birth in British Columbia, is a loving portrait of city soundmarks. Each track focuses on a certain element of the city's voice: the harbor ambience, the music of horns and whistles, park sounds, etc.; there is no chaos or sense of overwhelm here, but rather a celebration of the sonic beauties and comforts found in daily city sounds. Carl G. Jung (1875-1961)


Na primavera de 1957, com a idade de 81 anos, C. G. Jung tomou a iniciativa de escrever a narrativa da sua vida e obra. Regularmente, tinha conversas com a sua amiga e colega Aniela Jaffe, colaborando com ela na preparação do texto baseado nessas conversas. Por vezes, ele mesmo escreveu de sua mão capítulos inteiros do livro, e continuou a trabalhar nas fases finais do manuscrito até quase à data da sua morte, em 6 de Junho de 1961. O programa de hoje foi baseado em leituras desse livro: Memories, Dreams, reflections.

«on February 20, 1962 at 9:47:39 am EST, John Glenn rode Friendship 7 from Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 14 to become an American hero. Over the Indian Ocean on his first orbit, Glenn became the first American to witness the sunset from above 100 miles. Awed but not poetically inclined, he described "this moment of twilight is simply beautiful. The sky in space is very black, with a thin band of blue along the horizon." On the nightside of Earth, nearing the Australian coastline, Glenn made his planned star, weather, and landmark observations. Within voice radio range of the Muchea, Australia, tracking station, Glenn and Gordon Cooper began a long space-to-Earth conversation. The astronaut reported that he felt fine, that he had no problems, and that he could see a very bright light and what appeared to be the outline of a city. Cooper answered that he probably saw the lights of Perth and Rockingham. Glenn also said that he could see stars as he looked down toward the "real" horizon - as distinguished from the haze layer he estimated to be about seven or eight degrees above the horizon on the nightside - and clouds reflecting the moonlight. "1975 saw the release of Kosugi's best solo recording, Catch Wave. This features on one side "an excerpt from a meta-media solo improvisation" utilising heavily-processed violin, voice, radio and oscillators (the latter modified via wind and light) to create a massive drone piece. Side two is "a triple performance by a solo vocalist" where a vocal phrase is taken and electronically modified until it loses any meaning other than as part of the wave form. This LP represented a continuation of his interest in the heterodyne phenomenon, where alternating currents of different frequencies combined to produce new frequencies, the sum and difference of the original frequencies. "Voices, language and space… they interested me even in the early 60s when I wrote The Emperor of Ice Cream for the ONCE Festivals in Ann Arbor. Since each of us knows so much about the behavior of the voice - intimate endearments, rage at a distance - it is an ideal vehicle for auditory spatial illusions (all the more when in the service of language and its powers of invocation). In the early 70s, at the Center for Music Experiment in La Jolla, I heard daily rehearsals of the Extended Vocal Techniques Ensemble as they perturbed vocal norms. Evenings, I read my daughter to sleep trying to capture, for each character in the story, an individual and consistent vocal behavior. She was a demanding critic, and stimulated a good deal of nocturnal reflection about vocal identity. Electronics, at first analogue, later digital systems, offered rather precise control over auditory space (a particular sound’s size, location, distance, the character of the host space in which it was heard). I sought spare but evocative texts and tried to conjure up unfamiliar yet appropriate vocal behaviors with which to present them. The five works in the series thus far share a concern with the potential of auditory spatial imaging: this is a subject still only tentatively broached. A reedição do disco "An Awkward Pause" dos Nurse With Wound, em duplo CD, traz uma pequena surpresa: uma faixa de aproximadamente 2 minutos, intitulada "Two Shaves and a Shine (Ingredients) Create your own track!".
No dia 25 de Novembro, a emissão do vosso programa de rádio favorito foi inteiramente cozinhada utilizando apenas esses mesmos ingredientes.

Two Shaves and a Shine remix contest!
As most of you know, disc 2 of our 'An Awkward Pause' reissue contains a track entitled 'Two Shaves and a Shine (Ingredients) Create your own track!'. We've decided to take that literally and have a contest which will allow you, the listener, to create your own version of 'Two Shaves' and submit it to us.All completed tracks will be uploaded by you to the site at
http://www.jnanarecords.com/newsf.html and passed on to Steven. After the competition is closed (December 31, 2006), Steven will choose his favorites, with one entry being selected as the winner.At that point, we will post the Fave 10 on the site and allow you to download both the tracks and custom artwork (designed by Steven), to make your own CD of Steven's favorites. The winner will receive the original piece of Steven's art which was used to form the basis of the CD cover.The discs will be in stock in the last week of October. Allowing for possible delays and mailing time as well, it should still leave a good 4–6 weeks for you to create your masterpiece! RulesAll tracks must include some portion of each element of 'Two Shaves and a Shine' as released on 'An Awkward Pause'. All tracks are to be no longer than 5 minutes. All tracks are to be uploaded in MP3 format, with a bit rate of 128 kbps and a sample rate of 44.100 kHz. You can, if you wish, give your track a title and specify an artist/band name for yourself (you can of course use your real name). This information can be supplied on the upload form. It is recommended that you name your MP3 file so that it includes your real name and/or track title, to make identification easier for us at this end. Tracks must be uploaded to the site by 11:59 pm (US PST) December 31, 2006. Contest winners will be announced by March 31, 2007. A valid email address must be included. A "
Máquina Preservadora" [inspiração num conto de Philip K. Dick] é um processo viral que subverte a intenção inicial de conservar a obra de arte musical num organismo animal. Uma obra de arte não pode ser conservada, mas apenas corrompida e transformada pelo Tempo que ela própria abre. O animal é uma estrutura maquinal, mas viscosa, fluida, instável, e nunca simplesmente mecânica, pelo que baralha as regras da causalidade eficiente e tende a fugir aos mecanismos do Império da Prisão de Ferro Negro. "Máquina Preservadora" é, então, o vírus que corrompe e modifica, o movimento delirante num colete-de-forças, a inversão da matemática criativa que desmultiplica o 3 do 1 em Pi, o lapso, a falha, o hiato de som a que chamamos ruído, o bip de um desfibrilador num troço de auto-estrada.
